CARMEN, DAVAO DEL NORTE – Authorities intercepted a shipment of suspected smuggled cigarettes valued at approximately ₱22.5 million and arrested eight individuals during a coordinated operation conducted by the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Carmen, Davao del Norte on June 4, 2026.

The operation was carried out by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in coordination with other police units, following intelligence monitoring of suspected illegal transport activities involving land and sea routes across regional areas.

Police said the shipment was intercepted before it could reach local markets, resulting in the recovery of around 900 master cases of cigarettes that allegedly lacked proper customs documentation and required tax markings.

Authorities also seized several vehicles and equipment believed to have been used in transporting the contraband, which investigators said may indicate an organized smuggling operation rather than an isolated incident.

The eight arrested individuals are currently in police custody while authorities verify their identities and determine their possible involvement in a wider smuggling network. Charges are being prepared for violations of customs and tax regulations under Philippine law.

The PNP said the operation highlights its continued crackdown on illegal trade activities that affect government revenue and legitimate businesses, adding that intelligence-driven operations will remain intensified nationwide.

Officials also said further investigation is ongoing to determine the source of the shipment and to identify other possible individuals or groups involved in the smuggling activity.
