50 INDIAN STAR TORTOISES RESCUED AS BOC, PNP CRACK DOWN ON WILDLIFE SMUGGLING AT NAIA

MANILA, Philippines — Authorities at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 intercepted a Malaysian passenger arriving from Bangkok, Thailand, on Friday for allegedly attempting to smuggle 50 live Indian star tortoises into the country.

The operation was carried out by personnel from the Bureau of Customs (BOC) and the Philippine National Police-Aviation Security Group (PNP-AVSEGROUP) during routine inspection procedures at the airport.

According to authorities, the protected wildlife species were discovered concealed in the passenger’s luggage upon arrival. The Indian star tortoise is a species commonly targeted in the illegal wildlife trade due to its distinctive star-patterned shell and high demand among exotic pet collectors.

The confiscated tortoises were immediately turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for proper handling, assessment, and disposition in accordance with existing wildlife protection laws.

Authorities are currently investigating the incident and determining possible violations of the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act and other relevant regulations governing the transport and trade of endangered species.

The BOC reiterated its commitment to strengthening border security measures and combating wildlife trafficking, emphasizing the importance of protecting biodiversity and preventing the illegal entry of endangered animals into the country.
