ATENEO DE DAVAO FULFILLED LATE ATHLETE RENE BATERBONIA’S DREAM FOR HIS SIX SIBLINGS

In a gesture of compassion and tribute, Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU) has announced that it will provide full scholarships to the six siblings of late student-athlete Rene Clert “Bobet” N. Baterbonia, ensuring that his dream of securing a brighter future for his family lives on.

The announcement was made by ADDU President Fr. Karel San Juan, SJ, following a funeral Mass held in honor of the young athlete. Speaking before family, friends, and members of the academic community, Fr. San Juan revealed that the university would shoulder the educational expenses of Baterbonia’s six siblings from Basic Education through College at Ateneo de Davao.

“Isa po sa mga pangarap ni Bobet ay matutupad,” Fr. San Juan said. “Ang pangarap na nagdala sa kaniya sa Maynila at iwan ang kaniyang pamilya rito sa Davao—ang mabigyan ng magandang kinabukasan ang kaniyang mga kapatid.”

According to the university, the scholarship program is a heartfelt tribute to Baterbonia’s sacrifices and unwavering commitment to helping his family through education. The initiative aims to honor the legacy he leaves behind and to continue the aspirations he worked hard to achieve.

Baterbonia, a student-athlete of Ateneo de Manila University, tragically lost his life after drowning during a team-building activity in Aurora Province last Monday. His sudden passing sent shockwaves across the academic and sports communities, prompting an outpouring of grief and support for his family.

Though his life was cut short, Baterbonia’s dedication and love for his family continue to inspire those he leaves behind. Through the educational opportunities granted to his siblings, his dream of lifting his family through education will endure for years to come.

For many, the scholarship is more than financial assistance—it is a lasting testament to a young man whose sacrifices have become the foundation of a brighter future for those he loved most.
