MANILA, Philippines — Despite being under detention while facing plunder and graft charges, Sen. Jinggoy Estrada has been elected chairman of the Senate Committee on Electoral Reforms, placing him at the forefront of legislative measures concerning the country's election laws, voting systems, and electoral processes.

The appointment was made as part of the Senate's committee reorganization, assigning Estrada to lead one of the chamber's standing committees responsible for reviewing and proposing reforms to the Philippine electoral system.

Estrada is currently detained after surrendering to authorities following the issuance of a non-bailable arrest warrant in connection with a plunder case arising from the alleged flood control fund anomaly. He has consistently denied the allegations and has vowed to clear his name through the legal process.

His designation as committee chair has drawn public attention because it comes while he remains detained and is facing ongoing criminal proceedings. Under Senate rules, committee chairmanships are determined by the chamber, while the legal proceedings against Estrada continue before the Sandiganbayan.

The Senate Committee on Electoral Reforms has jurisdiction over proposed legislation involving election laws, voting procedures, political party reforms, campaign regulations, and other measures aimed at improving the country's electoral system.

The legal cases against Estrada remain pending, and no final judgment has been rendered.
