Powerful 7.8 Quake Damages Buildings in General Santos City

A powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck parts of Mindanao at approximately 7:37 a.m. on Monday, June 8, 2026, triggering panic, evacuations, and reports of structural damage in General Santos City and nearby areas.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the earthquake's epicenter was located about 13 kilometers south of General Santos City.

Residents rushed out of homes, schools, offices, and commercial establishments as strong shaking was felt across several provinces in southern Mindanao. PHIVOLCS reported Intensity VII in General Santos City, a level capable of causing damage to vulnerable structures and alarming residents.

One of the most significant incidents reported involved a building at Notre Dame of Dadiangas University, where part of a structure reportedly collapsed following the strong tremor. Authorities immediately began assessing the extent of the damage while ensuring the safety of students and school personnel.

Initial reports also indicated minor structural damage in portions of a major shopping mall in the city, while other establishments conducted precautionary evacuations as inspections were carried out. Damage assessments remain ongoing as local government units and disaster response agencies continue monitoring affected areas.

The earthquake also disrupted normal operations in several parts of Mindanao, prompting the suspension of classes and government work in some localities. Reports of interruptions to electricity, water, and internet services were also recorded in portions of the SOCCSKSARGEN region.

Authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant for possible aftershocks and to avoid entering visibly damaged buildings until structural inspections have been completed. Emergency response teams remain on alert as assessments continue throughout the day.
