The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) confirmed over the weekend that the assassination threats made by Vice President Sara Duterte against the president and his allies were "neither a metaphor nor a hyperbole."

NBI director Melvin Matibag said they confirmed this during the investigation and it has since become one of the charges cited in the two impeachment complaints filed against her.

“What we know—and this is based on our own findings—[is] that [the threat] was just metaphor or hyperbole. But that was planned, actually,” the NBI chief said.

The bureau is also in the process of finding out the identity of the assassin and if it progressed beyond words.

“So, we know that she really talked to someone, but we want to find out who is that person,” Matibag said.

In a November 2024 press conference, the Vice President claimed she had contacted an individual to kill the President, First Lady Liza Marcos, and former Speaker Martin Romualdez should anything happen to her.

The House Committee on Justice is scheduled to deliberate on the alleged threat this Wednesday, April 29, with Director Matibag and other NBI officials expected to testify as resource persons to provide further details on the bureau's findings.
