A meteor was spotted passing near Mayon Volcano on Monday evening, according to monitoring footage released by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

The bright object was seen at around 10:33 p.m. by Phivolcs' Ligñon Hill IP Camera.

“The meteor did not directly strike the slopes of the volcano as it disintegrated before hitting the ground," PHIVOLCS said.

As it passed by, Mayon Volcano remained under Alert Level 3 in PHIVOLCS' five-step alert system, indicating that the magma is near or at the surface.

The volcano was already on its 140th day of eruption, producing lava flows, rockfalls, and pyroclastic density currents, or “uson."

PHIVOLCS said Mayon emitted 1,124 tons of sulfur dioxide over the past 24 hours and recorded 57 volcanic earthquakes during the same monitoring period.

Authorities reminded the public that entry into the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone around Mayon Volcano remains prohibited due to possible lava flows, sudden eruptions, rockfalls, and pyroclastic density currents.

PHIVOLCS continues to closely monitor Mayon Volcano as volcanic activity persists in Albay Province.
