A sanitary landfill collapsed Wednesday afternoon in New Carmen, Davao City, leaving one scavenger dead, two injured, and two women missing beneath the debris.

Authorities recovered the body of a 30-year-old man who was buried under the collapsed garbage and later turned his remains over to his family.

According to police investigators, continuous heavy rainfall caused water to build up beneath the landfill, weakening the ground and triggering the landslide.

Parts of the collapsed waste were reportedly buried near houses forcing several families to evacuate to a temporary shelter near the barangay hall.

Search operations remain ongoing as rescuers continue clearing the debris to locate the two missing victims.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is now considering suspending operations at the landfill following the incident.

Authorities are also assessing the structural stability of the site amid concerns over increasing waste volume in Davao City, which reportedly reaches up to 800 tons daily.
