In one of the most surprising moves of the 2026 NBA free agency period, LeBron James is reportedly headed to the Philadelphia 76ers after agreeing to a two-year, $8 million veteran minimum contract.

According to reports from ESPN and NBA insider Marc Stein, the deal includes a player option for the 2027–28 season. James is expected to earn approximately $3.88 million during the 2026–27 campaign, with the option to return the following season for around $4.07 million.
The signing marks another major offseason acquisition for the 76ers under lead executive Mike Gansey. Philadelphia had already strengthened its roster by acquiring Jaylen Brown, and now adds the league's all-time leading scorer to a core featuring Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.
By accepting a veteran minimum contract, James gives the 76ers greater salary cap flexibility, allowing the organization to maintain a championship-caliber roster while pursuing another NBA title.
The addition of the four-time NBA champion immediately elevates expectations in Philadelphia, with many analysts viewing the 76ers as one of the strongest contenders for the 2026–27 NBA championship.
Meanwhile, James' departure leaves questions for several teams that were linked to the future Hall of Famer, including the Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and Golden State Warriors, all of whom reportedly explored the possibility of adding the 21-time All-Star.
Philadelphia now enters the new season with one of the NBA's most star-studded lineups, as fans await how James will complement Embiid, Brown, and Maxey in pursuit of another championship.
