Alex Eala dug deep to outlast former doubles partner Nikola Bartunkova, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, completing a gutsy comeback to capture the Birmingham Open title and finally snap her winless streak against Czech opponents.

The Filipina tennis star showed remarkable composure in a tightly contested final, overcoming an early setback before taking control of the latter stages of the match to secure one of the biggest titles of her professional career.

The championship clash carried an added layer of intrigue as Eala and Bartunkova had shared the court as doubles partners earlier in the tournament. After their doubles campaign ended in the opening round, both players found success in the singles draw and ultimately squared off for the trophy.

Eala dropped the opening set after Bartunkova broke late to claim a 7-5 advantage. Refusing to fold, the Filipina responded with an aggressive second-set performance, leveling the match with a 6-3 win before surviving a tense deciding set.

With the third set hanging in the balance, Eala held firm under pressure and capitalized on key opportunities down the stretch, edging Bartunkova 7-5 to seal the victory.

Beyond lifting the trophy, the win finally broke Eala’s “Czech curse.” The Filipina had entered the final without a victory against 13 Czech opponents since turning professional in 2020, but erased that statistic in dramatic fashion by defeating Bartunkova on one of the biggest stages of her season.

During the trophy presentation, Eala was reminded that her name now joins a list of Birmingham champions that includes tennis icons such as Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, Maria Sharapova, and Petra Kvitová.

“All those names that you’ve mentioned are tennis greats, and I am so honored to be lifting this trophy today. But lifting this trophy does not mean that I will be among the greats yet, so I’m motivated to keep working,” Eala said.

Despite the victory, Eala was gracious in acknowledging Bartunkova, describing the final as a battle that could have gone either way.

“It’s one of those days I wish we could both win. This match was incredible. I think it was anyone’s game,” she said.

The 21-year-old also expressed gratitude to the Birmingham crowd, whose support she said helped create a sense of home throughout the week.

“I like to say that home is the people and not a place, to everyone who’s come throughout the week and withstood the weather and all of that, thank you,” Eala sharee.

Reflecting on the crucial moments that defined the match, Eala credited both determination and a bit of fortune for carrying her across the finish line.

The title adds another milestone to Eala’s rapidly growing résumé as she continues her breakthrough season on the international circuit and builds momentum heading into the remainder of the grass-court campaign.
