A $250,000 grand prize and the coveted Top Chef title went to Filipina chef Rhoda Magbitang, who impressed judges not with extravagant ingredients or flashy techniques, but with a finale menu inspired by Filipino comfort food staples—lugaw, tortang talong, and kaldereta.
Magbitang, who was born in the Philippines and is now based in Hawaii, emerged victorious in Season 23 of the internationally acclaimed cooking competition after presenting a four-course meal that celebrated her Filipino heritage. Her win marks a major milestone not only in her culinary career but also for Filipino cuisine, which took center stage before a global audience.
Rather than departing from her roots, Magbitang leaned into them. Drawing inspiration from the flavors of her childhood and family traditions, she elevated familiar Filipino dishes into fine dining creations that earned praise from the judges for both their technical excellence and emotional storytelling.
The victory capped a remarkable comeback for Magbitang, who was previously eliminated during the competition before fighting her way back through Last Chance Kitchen and advancing to the finale.
For many Filipinos, the win is more than a personal triumph. It is another sign of the growing international recognition of Filipino cuisine, proving that dishes commonly found on Filipino dining tables can compete—and win—on one of the world’s biggest culinary stages.
