The United States is no longer just investing in Philippine infrastructure; it is helping build a massive economic corridor designed to transform Luzon into one of Asia’s next major trade and manufacturing routes.

During a high-level visit to Subic Bay on May 13, members of the Luzon Economic Corridor (LEC) Steering Committee delegation from the United States Embassy met with officials of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) to push forward the LEC, an ambitious international initiative that aims to connect Subic, Clark, Manila, and Batangas into a single integrated economic powerhouse.

Led by US Ambassador and Senior Advisor for Economic, Energy, and Business Affairs Heather Variava, the embassy's economic team held discussions with SBMA Chairman and Administrator Eduardo Jose Aliño. Highlights of the discussions were plans for railway connectivity, modernized ports, green energy projects, and semiconductor supply chains, which are all critical in the global competition for trade, logistics, and technology manufacturing.

Launched in April 2024 under the G7’s Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGI), this began as a trilateral initiative involving the Philippines, the United States, and Japan.

However, Aliño revealed that the initiative has since expanded to include Australia, Denmark, France, Italy, South Korea, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

“This ambitious venture will strengthen infrastructure, supply chains, and green energy across Subic, Clark, Manila, and Batangas,” Aliño said.

The delegation’s visit forms part of ongoing coordination efforts between the United States, the Philippine government, and business leaders to advance strategic infrastructure and investment projects under the corridor initiative.

For Subic, the stakes are massive. Once known mainly as a former US naval base, the area is now being positioned as a future gateway for international trade, advanced industries, and regional investment - potentially reshaping jobs, transport, and economic activity across Luzon in the coming years.
