Amid growing backlash and online fears over possible restrictions on rooftop solar systems, Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has publicly clarified that it is “not against” solar energy, insisting that its push for regulation is centered on safety, not control.

In an official statement, Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications Joe R. Zaldarriaga acknowledged the rising number of Filipinos turning to solar power to cut electricity costs and seek cleaner energy alternatives.
“We want to be clear: Meralco is not against the adoption of renewable energy or the use of solar equipment,” the Zaldarriaga said in his statement.
The clarification comes as concerns continue to spread online following discussions surrounding tighter monitoring of unregistered or improperly coordinated rooftop solar installations, sometimes referred to as “guerrilla solar.”
Meralco said the issue is not about limiting consumer choice, but ensuring that installations meet proper safety and technical standards.
“It is not a fiscal issue, nor an attempt to impose control, but a matter of public safety,” the statement added.
The power distributor stressed that it does not regulate solar installations, but urged consumers to coordinate with their distribution utility or electric cooperative before installing rooftop systems to avoid compatibility and grid-related issues.
The company also emphasized that improperly installed or unreported solar systems could affect emergency response capabilities and overall grid stability.
The debate highlights the growing tension between the rapid rise of household solar adoption in the Philippines and the country’s traditional power distribution system, as more consumers seek alternatives amid soaring electricity prices.
